HISTORY It is believed that this is the real Ithaca, Odysseus' island, instead of the one everybody knows. Despite the fact that Lefkada is so close to the greek mainland, the island was cut off from it, changing hands among different rulers. However, this island is quite different from the rest of the Ionian islands, in terms of the Venetian influence in cultural life, probably due to the prolonged period of the Turkish occupation.
